You will undoubtedly want to know all the features, the price to fit your budget, and warranty for your specific best home elliptical unit.
By reading our elliptical reviews you will discover the one for your body type and the goals you have in mind. Elliptical trainers are low impact and perfect for your lower and upper body being easy on your joints to burn off calories and strengthen muscles.
Advantages Using Elliptical Trainers
Cushioned pedals are used with the best elliptical machines for home use. They also incorporate a smooth circular motion with its drive system that simulates walking or jogging outdoors. With the trainer, your feet never leave the pedals supporting your joints continuously. This will increase your muscle tone allowing you to burn more calories for weight loss.
There are three types of elliptical training machines:
- Basic without all the advanced features and extras,
- Standard, and
- Elite for home use.
Each type is priced differently from under $300 to $1500 plus. If you do not need or want the heart rate feature, you can purchase a unit at a more affordable cost. The elliptical trainer reviews below will illustrate what I’m talking about just for you.
The trainers are available in upright consoles and under-the-desk models.
Design and Space
Design: Different brands offer distinctive designs. Some machines come with wheels for moving and storage and other brands do not. Some are foldable while other brands are not. This is dependent on where the flywheel drive system is located, such as the front, back, or sides.
With the rear-drive trainers where the flywheel is in the back, those units are not as easy to move and transport, whereas the front-drive units with its flywheel in the front are easier to move being more compact.
The newer models will have the center-drive design with the flywheel on the left or right side of the machine and some even fold. Those are not reviewed here.
Space: What you need for space will determine what elliptical is best for you. The units that are heavier holding more user weight usually have no wheels making them hard to move. If you absolutely must move the elliptical, then opt for a lighter unit with wheels that folds.
Brake, Resistance System Level, and Flywheel
The most important aspects for your consideration are the flywheel weight, braking, and resistance levels for your training. These factors will regulate how durable the trainer machine is, how the unit feels, and how quiet it operates.
Try to find a machine that uses magnets for resistance with eddy current brake systems. The most common machines use electronic magnetic resistance having usually only three parts being the servo motor that moves the magnets into position creating resistance, and a computer board telling the motor to move them.
Manual brake systems use a tension knob to adjust the level of resistance. Electromagnetic brakes are controlled by pressing the buttons on the handlebars.
The weight of the flywheel is important since it uses magnets to give tension. The basic and standard models have flywheel weight to be around 15-pounds, while elite models will be about 17-pounds or more and cost more.
The more the flywheel weighs the smoother the elliptical trainer will operate.
If you want all the bells and whistles with advanced options such as Apple®, Android®, built-in speakers, Bluetooth® or Internet connectivity, you will need the elite trainer.
Display screens can be LCD (liquid crystal display) or LED (light emitting diodes) for light and some are even backlit.
Screen size varies with the brand from around 5-inches up to 10-inches for the elite models.
Standard and elite units will have a rack for books or phones and a bottle holder. Basic units will not.
Under-the-desk elliptical machines will not offer holders since they have no upright console. Not all ellipticals will have heart rate monitors. The elite units will have a wireless heartrate monitor, such as on #10 Schwinn® reviewed below.
Ellipticals do not have an incline function as the inclining treadmills do.
Don’t Forget the Warranty
You will want a Warranty for the frame, parts, and labor. Some manufacturers will provide you with a 1-year Warranty and others 2- to 5-years depending on the price you paid and the brand.

Tips Using Elliptical Exercise Machines
Always read the User’s Manual that comes with your machine.
Some people think the ellipticals are boring and not effective. Not true. Exercising on one will up your heartrate even more than a treadmill, a good thing, and it’s better than sitting on the couch watching TV all day getting no exercise.
Ellipticals will improve your fitness just as efficiently as a treadmill or the expensive StairMaster®.
There is a right and wrong way to use the elliptical machine, so watch the video below.
- To be safe, step on the elliptical machine carefully and slowly.
- Let your muscles warm up by starting slowly for at least 5- to 10-minutes.
- Your first day might be only for 10-minutes while others can use it for 30-minutes and up after first warming their muscles.
- After you’ve finished your exercise, remember that the cool down is a must for 5- to 10-minutes.
- Use a bit of resistance that’s better for you than not. The flywheel is what rotates for more momentum using your feet. Your muscles won’t work as hard moving the pedals and when you increase the resistance, your legs and arms will work harder on an upright elliptical machine.
- Use the heartrate monitor to check your heartrate so not to go beyond your limits. If you feel dizzy, breathless, or weak, stop and sit down. The HR monitor lets you know how intense you are running the machine.
- Stay hydrated—dehydration can cause you to be dizzy, tired, confused, weak, and with blurry vision. Stop, get off, sit down and drink water.
- Keep your body balanced and don’t lean on the elliptical upright machine. This helps you to avoid injuries.
- On the full upright machine, be sure to hold the handrails lightly to keep your body secure and in the right position with your arms relaxed. If you don’t want to hold the bars, let your arms drop to your side naturally. This method is better for strengthening your core muscles. Be sure your back is straight with no slouching over.
- Maintain good posture for proper body alignment. If you don’t, you can feel sore and stiff later.
- Keep your feet close inside the pedals and keep the weight on your heels rather than your toes the same as when you walk off the machine.

At the end of the day, it’s all about what you can afford for having your elliptical exercise machine needs met. Read customer reviews on Amazon because those buyers will let you know their honest opinion using the under-desk or full-size elliptical exerciser they bought. Happy shopping!
